A Whole-Fruit Citrus Wellness Tonic
I’m often asked about my homemade citrus wellness tonic (HCQ) ~ affectionately called Sunshine in a Bottle. I use it year-round and especially appreciate it during times when others around me seem run down. It’s a simple, nourishing way to support the immune system through every season.
Unlike rind-only recipes that can taste bitter and may waste good fruit, this version uses the entire fruit — making it naturally sweeter, smoother, and more enjoyable.
🍊 Ingredients
Use organic fruit, rinsed well with vinegar water:
- 2 red grapefruits
- 2 oranges
- 2 lemons
🍋 Preparation
- Cut the whole fruit (peel, pulp, and juice) into chunks.
- Place in a crock pot and cover completely with quality filtered water.
- Simmer on low all day, keeping the lid on (do not lift).
- Turn off heat and allow to cool overnight.
- Strain the liquid into glass jars and refrigerate.
♻️ Second Extraction
- Add fresh filtered water to the remaining fruit.
- Repeat the simmering process.
- Cool overnight and strain again.
- Store in glass jars or freeze in ice cube trays for later use.
🥤 How I Use Sunshine in a Bottle
- ¼ cup daily as part of my regular wellness routine.
- I may take a bit more when I’m around others who are under the weather.
- Often taken with zinc to enhance absorption.
This whole-fruit method creates a bright, gently sweet citrus tonic that feels supportive, warming, and energizing ~ like capturing a little sunshine in every season.
