NLP with Hypnosis Creates Trust and Shifts Mind-talk

N-L-P (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) can be explained as: Neuro is how our neurology (nerves, feelings, and emotions) is programmed (responds, reacts, changes) by linguistics (words we see, hear, and speak). Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) helps a hypnotist to read people more readily by watching, observing, and mirroring them. It establishes the critical trust that is needed between the hypnotist and the client.

Hypnotists who are trained in NLP learn to be observant and aware of others so that they are able to connect in a way that facilitates important change work. An NLP trained hypnotist is able to step into another’s energy in order to read what is going on with that person more intuitively. By truly sensing what another is feeling, the hypnotist can be ever-present in conversation with the person. This form of trained empathy allows the hypnotist to truly understand what the client is feeling, sensing, or responding to, in order to best help in their efforts to change a habit, pattern or mindset. When the client really senses that the hypnotist is present, understands them, and comes from a place of non-judgment, the client feels more comfortable and open to change. Since most hypnotists are not therapists, the change work that is needed is based on a level of trust that allows clients to be open enough to allow the hypnotist to help them redirect their mind-talk.

There are many light trance NLP exercises that are used to help a client shift their mental talk rapidly. These techniques are tailored to the specific learning style of the person. NLP allows hypnotists to better understand how the client processes their world, which helps when using any technique that shifts mind-talk. A kinesthetic (touch-based) person responds better to a slower pace of listening, whereas a visual (sight-based) person gets bored if the hypnotist speaks too slowly because they prefer a faster pace. Hypnotists must match their tone, speed, and timbre of voice to that of the client so they stay connected. Seasoned hypnotists typically use the power of the client’s own words to redirect the power of their thoughts, which is enhanced with NLP. This has been a wonderful tool to assist my clients and I’m pleased to use these skills on a regular basis in sessions and even dealing with challenging people in day-to-day life.

Many politicians, influential speakers, and salespeople are trained in NLP, using it as a powerful influencer. Think of the motivational speaker Tony Robbins. He uses a version of NLP to positively influence thousands of people to help motivate them for positive change. There are those who can use NLP for power and control. However, everything we do in life is about intention. If the NLP trained person’s intention is to truly assist others, then it is a valuable tool to be used for the power of good.

Already a Certified Hypnosis Instructor for the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), I recently became a Certified NLP Trainer by the National Federation for NLP. I highly recommend taking the NLP Trainer’s Training for anyone who provides training programs or speaking engagements, to improve their speaking and teaching skills. The NLP Trainer’s Training makes use of the NLP skills to positively impact the flow of the class, the attentiveness of the students, and the powerful delivery of anything you want to share.

Also, I am excited to congratulate our first graduates of the Basic NLP class. Certified Hypnotists, Nichole Hanson, Noel Berube, Amy Martin, and Denise McCalvey did an amazing job completing the 40-hour NLP training program. They worked on many client-centered and self-improvement techniques. They all agree that the skills they learned will enhance their client sessions and their personal life in many ways. I am grateful to be a lifetime NLPer, having received my initial NLP training in the 1990s. However, it wasn’t until I started teaching hypnosis and NLP that I truly appreciated the value of the NLP skills that I had gained. I encourage every hypnotist to take NLP training for their client sessions.

Next week, Dr. Will Horton will be teaching several NLP classes at the National Guild of Hypnotists Convention in Marlboro, Massachusetts. For anyone interested in learning more about hypnosis, I highly recommend attending the NGH Conference in order to connect with many who are passionate about making a difference for others through hypnosis. I am delighted to be presenting both a seminar on How to Grow Your Business and a two-hour workshop on Empowering Clients for Positive Change.
