Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who have made a difference in our lives. I am ever grateful for those who have done so much and dedicated their lives to helping others. For me, it is also time to tend the gardens… time to clear the clutter in the yard, cultivate the new growth, and appreciate the beauty of our lovely perennial flowers, especially the dozens of glorious Rhododendrons in our backyard! Gardening is a lot of work… bending, stooping, pulling, and digging. However, as we focus our thoughts on what the plants need, gardening becomes like therapy for the body, mind, and spirit. As we pull out the weeds that choke the healthy growth and clear the deadwood from the bushes, we create space for healthy new growth to thrive.

We can use gardening as a metaphor for cultivating our own positive thoughts. Consider that we need to pull the tangled mental weeds out by the root, remove the old deadwood that constricts new growth, and cultivate the soil with care… before we plant new thought-ware—thoughts we choose to think. We have to take the time to nurture the new thoughts, like sprinkling water, and adding fertilizer and plenty of sunshine to help the garden grow. We can use the tools we have to establish a healthy mental garden, one that will reap wonderful fruit or beautiful flowers… in time.

Here are a few steps to cultivate your mental garden:

  1. Remove negative thoughts, attitudes and habits that are like weeds choking your success.
  2. Till your mind with lots of self-care: listen to music, soak in a bath, eat healthy, play.
  3. Plant seeds of positive thought to create opportunities for new growth.
  4. Water your spirit with precious time in the beauty of nature.
  5. Sprinkle in some gratitude (like fertilizer!) to allow positive thoughts to grow strong.

I was having anger issues and a lot of different things as a result of my past. I was a U.S. Army Ranger for eight years, was deployed six times to Iraq and Afghanistan. Then I contracted a few more years to the government and went back five more times. I’ve been through a lot.

The sessions were amazing. I feel like I now have the ability to calm myself down. I’ve learned a lot of things to do when these situations arise. I’ve learned how to push past them, or work through them instead of just getting pissed or acting out!

I would highly recommend this to veterans especially. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get themselves in a better spot. It is a great way to regain confidence in yourself as you deal with the things that happened in the past.
